Any reproduction is a new challenge to scholarship and masterly know-how

Up-to-date technology Traditional craftsmanship Limited edition

It all begins with a book. Not a common book but an original work of art in book form which is unique in the world. An illustrated manuscript as a picture gallery, alongside with painted miniatures and a beautifully written text. Only the facsimile production process enables us to make it accessible to the public. It alone provides the means for walking through an irreplaceable medieval work of art and enjoying at leisure page after page of its luxurious uniqueness. We at Faksimile Verlag Luzern have developed costly and time-consuming technical production processes allowing perfect reproduction - valuable editions as true images of the original.

Production

Here are some of the complex, perfectly combined production steps: The painted manuscript is photographed with a special camera, using particular procedures to avoid any possible damage to the original.

Up-to-date technology
Perfect images of the irreplaceable originals

The so created large-format slides are processed into original format films using electronic scanners, one for each colour used in the printing process.

When even the most modern technology fails, the lithographer corrects the films by hand. If the original manuscript is written in silver or gold, all portions executed in metal must be minutely copied for reproduction before gold and silver is applied in a special procedure.

It is a long way from the first proofs to the final fine art facsimile volume. Even the slightest colour deviations in the proofs are eliminated through constant comparison with the original, using complicated, complex printing techniques to achieve a perfect copy of the sumptuous original.

Traditional craftsmanship

The reproduced quires are gathered using methods of traditional craftsmanship and stitched by hand. The contents is bound in genuine leather which is previously trimmed on the edges. Both the covers and even the edges are stamped with gold foil, just like the original.

To guarantee the exclusiveness of each facsimile edition, every copy of a limited edition is numbered by hand, in time-demanding, meticulous handiwork. As each facsimile constitutes a newly created work of art, medieval masterpieces of book illumination live on in the masterpieces of the art of facsimile reproduction.
